The general legal height is 13 feet 6 inches. This is a statutory limit, not a clearance guarantee. A route may contain lower bridges, signs, utilities, rock cuts, signals, or facility structures.

The typical legal gross limit is 80,000 pounds on Interstates and US/WV routes, subject to axle and bridge-formula rules. A lower 65,000-pound limit can apply on local-service roads. Posted bridges and route-specific limits can be lower.

Current guidance generally calls for a front escort with a height pole when the load exceeds 15 feet high. The issued permit can impose additional requirements, and the carrier remains responsible for physical clearance.

A load above 12 feet and up to 14 feet commonly requires front and rear escorts on two-lane roads and a rear escort on four-lane roads. At more than 14 feet, front and rear escorts generally apply on all roads.

The current base single-trip permit fee is generally $20. Overweight movements also use a ton-mile charge, and bridge monitors or other special services can add cost. The online portal calculation and issued permit are the final fee authority.

Do not assume it does. Turnpike dimensions, weights, toll-plaza limits, operating windows, and instructions must be reviewed separately and incorporated into the approved movement.

West Virginia may authorize continuous travel for overweight-only loads that remain within legal dimensions and specified weight limits, such as up to 110,000 pounds on the Turnpike or 135,000 pounds on other eligible routes. The permit must expressly allow it.
